The Real Reason Families Are Leaving California for Portland Oregon

I hear this story a lot, because I lived a version of it myself. I left the SF Bay Area and landed in Portland and it was, without exaggeration, one of the best decisions my husband and I ever made. We now have two kids, ages four and seven, growing up in SE Portland, and I am not going back.

I am not going to pretend the move is right for everyone. But I can tell you exactly what is driving it and why so many California families are specifically landing here.

The cost of housing is the most obvious trigger but not the deepest reason.

Yes, what $1.1 million buys in Portland versus what it buys in Los Angeles, the Bay Area, or even San Diego is not a close comparison. In Portland you are buying a real home with real space in a real neighborhood with actual trees. You are not buying proximity to a parking spot and a one-car garage.

But the families who move and stay do not stay because of the math. They stay because of the life.

My kids grow up with more freedom than I had in California. There is space here, physically and culturally. Backyards and parks and trails and a pace that does not feel like everyone is running behind on something. Schools in many Portland neighborhoods and suburbs are strong. The parent community in SE Portland is genuinely tight-knit in a way that surprised me.

Oregon has no sales tax, which adds up meaningfully for families spending on groceries, clothing, gear, and everything that comes with having young kids. The income tax is real but the overall calculation almost always comes out favorably.

Portland also has a real professional economy. Nike, Intel, and Adidas are headquartered here. The tech and healthcare sectors are strong. Remote workers from California companies find the lifestyle arbitrage particularly compelling.

I moved here before I had kids and built my family here. I know what the transition looks and feels like. If this move is on your radar, reach out. This is genuinely my favorite conversation to have.
