Forest Park is one of the things that makes Portland genuinely special on a national level. More than 5,000 acres of urban forest with 80 miles of trails, essentially in the backyard of thousands of West Hills homes. Families who move up here for the trails build their weekend lives around Forest Park in a way that shapes how their kids spend their childhood. Hiking and trail running are not activities you drive somewhere to do. They are what you do after school.
The views from many West Hills properties are legitimately dramatic. Downtown Portland, the Willamette, the bridges, and Mount Hood on a clear day. Homes with east-facing terraces or decks become the center of family life in a way that is hard to fully appreciate until you are standing on one.
The tradeoff is real and worth naming. Daily errands require a car. Getting to the grocery store or your kids' activities means navigating the hill, and on the rare winter ice storm it can be inconvenient. The geography also means commute patterns differ depending on where your work is located.
At the $800,000 to $1.2 million range, the West Hills offers considerably more home and lot size than comparably priced inner Portland neighborhoods. If privacy, nature access, and space are high on your priority list, this part of the city deserves a genuine look.
